US universities intensify Indian student recruitment

The report highlights an interesting trend wherein more institutions are utilizing international partnerships (63 percent) and alumni networks (51 percent) to facilitate undergraduate student recruitment. At the graduate level, 77 percent of institutions consider India as their primary target market for the current academic year.

Higher education institutions across the United States are intensifying recruitment efforts for the 2023-24 academic year, particularly targeting students from India.

According to the Spring 2023 Snapshot on International Educational Exchange, which examined data from 527 U.S. universities and colleges, India remains the primary market for international student recruitment, while China also maintains significant importance, Erudera reported.

The report revealed that India leads the pack in attracting international students, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

Among the surveyed institutions, 57 percent prioritize undergraduate outreach in India. 

Additionally, there is a concerted effort to attract undergraduate students from other countries, including Vietnam, South Korea, and Brazil, with 48 percent, 41 percent, and 40 percent of institutions focusing on these respective nations.

The report highlights an interesting trend wherein more institutions are utilizing international partnerships (63 percent) and alumni networks (51 percent) to facilitate undergraduate student recruitment. At the graduate level, 77 percent of institutions consider India as their primary target market for the current academic year.

While India stands out as the most sought-after destination for graduate student recruitment, the report also acknowledges strong markets in China, Nigeria, and Vietnam. US colleges and universities are actively engaged in outreach efforts to attract prospective graduate international students from these regions.

To reach their recruitment goals, 61 percent of institutions are relying on online recruitment events, while 60 percent are leveraging social media platforms. The preference for online methods is attributed to the familiarity and technological proficiency of incoming students.

Citing the Open Doors report, the annual data for the 2021-22 academic year highlights a significant change in student demographics in the US, with a higher proportion of graduate students (41 percent) compared to undergraduates (36 percent) within the international student population.

The number of Indian students enrolled in the 2021-22 academic year reached close to 200,000, marking a significant 19 percent increase from the previous year, 

According to Statista, the total international student enrollment in US higher education institutions for 2021-22 was 914,095. These international students play a crucial role in contributing to the U.S. economy, with a combined contribution of $32 billion in 2022.
