UK, Morocco strengthen higher education ties

The United Kingdom and Morocco officially signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at increasing the utilization of English language assessment in Moroccan public universities. 

The UK government made the announcement recently, highlighting the collaborative efforts between the British Council in Morocco and Morocco’s Ministry of Higher Education.

The signing took place during the fifth meeting of the UK-Morocco Higher Education Commission, held at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office in London, according to a news release from the UK government.

The meeting, chaired by the British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, and Morocco’s Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation Abdellatif Miraoui, saw the presence of key representatives from both countries’ governments, educational institutions, and quality assurance agencies.

The partnership reflects Morocco’s recent initiatives to bolster English language education as a means of enhancing its international competitiveness, attracting foreign investment, and fostering global connectivity, according to a report from Morocco World News.

The primary focus of the meeting revolved around strengthening collaboration between Morocco and the UK in higher education, with a specific emphasis on English language learning and assessment, transnational education, and scientific research. 

The UK government said that the agreement opens doors for Moroccan universities to establish future partnerships with UK institutions in student assessments, paving the way for enhanced cooperation.

The institutional partnership between Keele University and the Moroccan Ministry of Higher Education was hailed as a significant achievement, demonstrating the potential for fruitful cooperation. Moreover, the meeting acknowledged the noteworthy climate research partnerships between University College London and University Ibn Tofail of Kenitra, contributing to addressing climate-related issues.

A wide range of topics, including culture, education, politics, economy, and security was also covered during the dialogue.

The report noted that Morocco has demonstrated its commitment to improving English language education through a series of initiatives and partnerships in recent years. 

The UK, renowned for its expertise in English language teaching and learning, has emerged as an invaluable partner for Morocco in supporting its growing interest in English language education and in fostering stronger ties in higher education.
