Deakin University launches India campus

Deakin University has officially launched its India campus, making history as the first foreign university in the country.

The initiative signifies a collaborative effort between the Indian and Australian Governments and Deakin University, aligning with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, as per a press release.

Philip Green OAM, Australian High Commissioner to India, expressed that Australia setting up India’s first-ever foreign university campus is a landmark moment in Australia–India relations. He mentioned that this development opens a new chapter in their education ties, emphasizing that this is only the beginning, during his address at the inauguration event at the India campus in GIFT City, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Deakin’s GIFT City Campus in India is expected to offer local students access to world-class postgraduate courses in business analytics and cybersecurity at half the cost of Australian international fees.

The campus, featuring digital classrooms and cybersecurity labs, aims to prepare students for leadership in emerging technology sectors.

Professor Iain Martin highlighted the commitment to global education that empowers students in the digital age.

“This is an investment in the future leaders who will uphold and strengthen the bond between our nations,” he said.

Two fully funded scholarships will be awarded to economically challenged students, emphasizing the university’s dedication to fostering educational equity and nurturing local talent.

Additionally, the campus will serve as a startup incubator, offering specialized short courses and extensive support to nurture entrepreneurial talent and innovation, contributing to the regional startup landscape.

Cross-cultural education vision

Ravneet Pawha, vice-president (Global Alliances) and CEO (South Asia) of Deakin, expressed excitement about the cross-cultural education opportunities between Australia and India. She mentioned that their bold vision for GIFT City is to become a regional hub in the future, attracting students from across the globe to India and offering Australian students a unique opportunity to spend a trimester at Gujarat.

Following the launch, Deakin University also initiated industry engagements with the inaugural Deakin University x IABCA Leadership Roundtable.

The event brought together figures from Indian and Australian governments and industries for a dialogue on ‘Building Sustainable Futures across the Australia–India Corridor,’ setting the stage for strategic partnerships.

Pawha commended the efforts and support from both nations’ governments, stating that the project sets the stage for innovative work in bilateral knowledge cooperation. 

She then encouraged Indian students and professionals to embrace the opportunity and emerge as global pioneers in a tech-forward economy.

The official Deakin University GIFT City Campus launch event, held alongside the Vibrant Gujarat summit, saw distinguished guests from government, academia, and industry.

Interest in studying at Deakin’s GIFT City Campus has surged, with potential students attracted to internationally accredited programs and unique internship opportunities within GIFT City’s industry network. 

Deakin GIFT City Campus applications close on March 31, 2024, with classes scheduled to commence in July 2024.
