Under Secretary of State Elizabeth Allen recognized the global impact of the US Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program that supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to expand diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in international education and society.

The event celebrated the program’s more than 41,000 alums across the United States and marked the conclusion of International Education Week 2023.

Seven Gilman alumni received the inaugural Gilman Alumni Changemaker Awards at the US Department of State.

They include William Blakey (University of Washington), Chelsea Hanway (University of Nebraska – Lincoln), Jade Fong (University of California, Berkeley), Fatima Kouyate (University of Georgia), Nataly Morales (University of North Georgia), Chou Moua (University of Minnesota), and Melissa Silva (University of North Georgia).

Grant details

The grant offers $10,000 in seed funding to Gilman alums for community projects in areas such as building community through arts, sports, and language; environmental protection; global health; human rights, refugees, and migrants; strengthening democratic institutions and combating misinformation; fostering Gilman alum networks and development; economic development and entrepreneurship; and science, technology, and innovation.

Since 2001, the Gilman Scholarship has funded over 41,000 US undergraduates from all 50 states for study and internships in 150+ countries. About 70 percent self-identify as racial or ethnic minorities, 60% hail from small towns or rural areas, and nearly 50 percent are first-generation college students.

The Gilman Scholarship, funded by Congress, is a US Department of State program executed through a grant to the Institute of International Education.

International education week

In a celebration of global interconnectedness and educational diversity, institutions across the United States are embracing International Education Week with an array of engaging and enlightening activities.

This initiative, jointly promoted by the US Department of State and the US Department of Education, advocates for the significant role that international education plays in fostering global competencies and relationships.

The capstone of the IEW events at the national level is the “Raise the Bar: Advancing Careers through Multilingual Education” event in Washington, D.C., which spotlights the importance of multilingual education in advancing careers.

The event features insights from speakers like Frances Vavrus and fellowship alums, offering networking opportunities for future educators and students alike.
