American college students appear to be taking time to embrace and utilize artificial intelligence for their studies, a survey by an education technology company revealed.

The survey conducted by EdTech firm Chegg showed that only 20 percent of American students have started using generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT or OpenAI, in their academic activities.

The study further revealed that the US falls far behind several countries in terms of AI usage among students. In Kenya, at least 63 percent of college students have started to use AI tools for schoolwork. At least 62 percent of students in Saudi Arabia and Spain have also started embracing AI, while 54 percent of students in Canada have also begun using this revolutionary innovation.

What’s limiting US students from using AI

“Students definitely expressed a strong interest in increasing their use of AI moving forward. So, while they may be slightly behind today, I don’t think they will be for long,” said Dr. Mirko Widenhorn, senior director of engagement strategy at EdTech firm Anthology.

Anthology, for its part, made a separate study that yielded similar results.

Widenhorn believes that falling behind in AI usage is not necessarily a negative thing for American students.

“It gives universities really time to think about, ‘okay, what should our policies around generative AI be, and how can we make sure that we’re teaching students how to appropriately use generative AI?'” he said

Meanwhile, Dr. Lisa Palmer, an AI expert at Southern Nazarene University, said impressions that using AI in school is considered cheating may be the reason why it is not widely used in American schools.

While AI has been widely used elsewhere, some institutions in the US have taken disciplinary action against students using these tools.

Palmer said a shift in perspective is needed among American students and educators for AI usage to grow in the school setting. She said there is a way to teach students how to use AI responsibly, looking at the tool as their partner in their educational journey.

AI growth in the next 5 years

The symbiosis between artificial intelligence and education is on an upward trajectory, with the forthcoming years promising significant expansion of AI applications within this sector, according to a report by think tank Technavio.

In its report titled “Artificial Intelligence Market In The Education Sector Market 2023-2027”, Technavio also noted that the upward trend underscores the rising importance of integrating AI into the educational landscape to boost learning outcomes.

Over the next five years, the research found that the education sector is poised for a transformative leap fueled by AI. It projected a net increase of $1,100.07 million by 2027 due to AI in the education market setting the stage for revolutionary changes.

These robust growth estimates suggest a compound annual growth rate of 41.14 percent within the forecast period, reflecting the rapidly accelerating pace of AI adoption in this sector.
