The South Korean Ministry of Education recently announced the creation of an International Student Support Division to formulate policies for recruiting students from abroad, particularly those from Vietnam.

South Korea’s Education Ministry established a new division, headed by Min Mi-hong of the ministry’s Lifelong Education for Students with Disabilities team, to focus on global education planning.

Korea’s international student population reached a record 166,870 in April 2022, according to the Korean Educational Development Institute, a 9.6 percent year-on-year increase despite pandemic-related dips earlier.

Of the 166,870 students, 40.4 percent were Chinese and 22.7 percent Vietnamese.

Chinese students, who make up a large share, saw their growth slow in April 202, increased by 0.16 percent year-on-year compared to a 5.9 percent rise for Vietnamese students.

Korea hosted more than 8,000 international students in April 2022, with Uzbekistan accounting for 5.16 percent of the total, followed by Mongolia (4.4 percent), Japan (3.4 percent), the United States (2.02 percent) and France (1.53 percent).

Jeon Min-hyon, president of Inje University in South Korea, visited Hanoi Polytechnic College on April 25 and signed a memorandum of understanding to open the doors for more students from Vietnam to study at Inje. The agreement also outlines support from Inje professors who will be present at transfer fairs held by Hanoi Polytechnic College to meet students interested in transferring.

Dongnam Health University has signed memoranda of understanding with Vietnamese universities Dong Do and Nghe An of Economics to establish student exchange programs.

Hanyang University had the highest number of international students in April 2022, with 6,999, followed by Kyung Hee University (6,912), Sungkyunkwan (6,676), Yonsei University (5,926) and Korea University (4,739).

South Korea’s 166,870 international students were largely concentrated in Seoul-based universities, with 46.2 percent enrolled across the top 10 institutions. Gacheon University was the only non-Seoul university to make it into the list of the country’s most popular destinations for foreign students, enrolling 3,057.

Representative Song Kyung-won of the Justice Party suggested that students opt for universities with higher status and quality of education when choosing where to study abroad.
