The Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education has entered into an agreement with the United Kingdom government to enhance collaboration in the higher education sector.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by Datuk Seri Abdul Razak Jaafar, the secretary-general of MoHE, and Susan Acland Hood from the UK Department for Education.

It also encompasses various areas of cooperation such as establishing strategic partnerships in scientific research and talent development between the two countries, as per a report by Malaymail.

The agreement also involves the exchange of staff, teachers, trainers, experts, and students between higher education institutions, subject to negotiations between MoHE and the UK’s Department of Business and Trade.

Additionally, the agreement includes a training platform for educational administrators and teachers, particularly those involved in service sectors.

Scholarships will be offered to individuals interested in pursuing further studies at higher education institutions recognized by both parties.

A bilateral program between recognized higher education institutions will be implemented to benefit both sides.

Efforts will be made to facilitate credit transfer and compatibility of programs between the higher education institutions of both countries. There will also be consideration given to mutual recognition of academic qualifications.

The MoU will also promote cooperation in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, information and communications technology, technical and vocational education and training, innovation, online learning, lifelong learning, and entrepreneurship.

The decision to sign the MoU is based on the belief that it will strengthen educational cooperation between the two countries. It is expected to enable more UK students to pursue studies in Malaysia, while facilitating research collaborations and student exchanges.

The agreement will also provide Malaysian students with the opportunity to gain exposure and broaden their perspectives through student exchanges, allowing them to learn about the social and cultural aspects of international students.

Moreover, international educational cooperation indirectly encourages local higher education institutions to enhance their competitiveness by offering high-quality educational programs that attract more international students.

Admitting students from the UK is believed to contribute to Malaysia’s economic development through the exchange of foreign currencies.

Razak also recently attended a gathering held at the University of London, where he had the opportunity to witness the signing of MoU between Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin, and the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies.
