European Commission deputy head Vera Jourova has urged companies deploying generative AI tools, including ChatGPT and Bard, to label such content.

The call came after several concerns about the potential abuse of the technology, with fears that bad actors and even governments could exploit it to disseminate disinformation on an unprecedented scale, as per the Economic Times report.

Since its unveiling last year with support from Microsoft, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has gained immense popularity, becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history.

The success has sparked a race among tech companies to develop and launch their generative AI products. However, the rapid advancement of this technology has raised alarms regarding its potential misuse.

Jourova emphasized the need for signatories, such as Microsoft with Bingchat and Google with Bard, to implement necessary safeguards to prevent malicious actors from utilizing these services to generate disinformation.

“Signatories who have services with a potential to disseminate AI-generated disinformation should in turn put in place technology to recognize such content and clearly label this to users,” she said.

The EU commissioner also urged these companies to develop technology that can effectively recognize such content and clearly label it for users. By doing so, she believes users would be better equipped to identify and evaluate potentially misleading or false information.

Companies like Google, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms, which have committed to the EU Code of Practice to combat disinformation, will be required to report on the safeguards they have implemented to address this issue.

Jourova stated that these companies must submit their reports in July, demonstrating their commitment to curbing the spread of AI-generated disinformation.

As concerns surrounding the misuse of generative AI tools grow, industry leaders and regulators are working together to establish guidelines and measures that can effectively mitigate the risks associated with this emerging technology.

AI is the use of computer systems to execute tasks that were previously carried out by humans, as per Forbes report. These tasks include generating content, making decisions, translating languages, handling customer service issues, processing insurance claims, and providing recommendations, among others.
