The People’s Republic of China has extended $1 million to the United Nations to bolster the education of Palestinian refugee children residing in the Gaza Strip.

Officials from China and the UN held a ceremonial turnover of the grant to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.

The gesture is expected to benefit the education program of the UNRWA, which is focused on enriching the learning experiences of 5,300 Palestinian refugee children across five UNRWA schools within the Gaza Strip.

Amid the backdrop of conflict, occupation, displacement, and the global health crisis, the UNRWA said it remains committed to delivering quality, inclusive, and resilient basic education.

Ambassador Zeng Jixin, head of the Office of the People’s Republic of China to the State of Palestine, lauded the UNRWA’s dedication to addressing the humanitarian needs of Palestinian refugees.

Jixin highlighted China’s recognition of the UNRWA’s role and expressed admiration for the agency’s unwavering efforts. He reiterated China’s commitment to supporting the UNRWA’s mandate as he handed over his country’s financial contribution.

The grant reportedly aligns with President Xi Jinping’s vision of resolving the Palestinian question and fostering stability, security, and prosperity in the Middle East.

Karim Amer, director of partnerships at the UNRWA, conveyed his gratitude and emphasized how China’s support has fortified the UNRWA’s mission of providing essential services to Palestinian refugees despite formidable challenges.

China’s collaboration with the UNRWA spans over six decades, with its inaugural contribution dating back to 1964.
