2 Las Vegas schools get $200K fund to train teachers in tech

In an effort to bridge the gap between education and technology, two schools in North Las Vegas are gearing up to implement a groundbreaking program valued at over $200,000.

The Education Institute, a pilot program developed in partnership with the Nevada Association of School Administrators, aims to equip teachers at Sedway Middle School and Cheyenne High School in North Las Vegas with the necessary skills to handle students in the ever-changing digital world.

The program focuses on positive behavior management, social-emotional learning, and family dynamics. Teachers now have the option to continue professional development classes at no cost to them, thanks to this initiative.

Jeffrey Geihs, the executive director of the Nevada Association of School Administrators, explains that the City of North Las Vegas approached them with the idea to improve their schools.

The program introduced by Council member and Mayor ProTemp Scott Black in North Las Vegas allows teachers to earn up to 24 educational credits per school year while continuing to work.

This program has been well-received by educators, with teachers expressing their appreciation for the opportunity it provides. Additionally, the program offers proper compensation to match the caliber of education being pursued.

Anthony Nunez, the principal of Cheyenne High School, has described the program as a blessing. Teachers have reached out to him to express their satisfaction and gratitude, stating that it has been exactly what they needed to start the school year.

Furthermore, the program has proven to be an effective recruitment tool, particularly in addressing the high vacancies at Cheyenne High School. Out-of-state teachers who have been interviewed have shown significant interest in participating in the program.
