House Republicans voted to pass a resolution that blocks the Biden-Harris administration’s student debt relief plan and ends the student loan payment pause. This move creates another barrier for the program as it awaits a Supreme Court decision.

Democratic representatives Rep. Jared Golden and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez voted in favor of a resolution that, if approved by both Congress and the Senate, could face a veto from President Joe Biden.

On May 24, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre praised President Biden’s plan to help borrowers prevent loan defaults when payments resume this summer.

Last summer, lower courts suspended Biden’s student loan debt relief plan without canceling any loans, but the White House has remained committed to it.

Education Secretary Miguel Cardona, facing skepticism from a conservative majority at the Supreme Court over two challenges to his plan, said he will continue to fight for debt relief for tens of millions of Americans.

Biden has expressed confidence in the legality of the plan to forgive up to $20,000 of student debt and plans to pursue it even if the Supreme Court weighs in. Eligible borrowers would benefit from this initiative.

“This relief is critical to over 40 million Americans as they recover from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic. We’re confident it’s legal. And we’re fighting for it in court,” Biden posted on Twitter on February 28.

The Education Department has announced that the student loan repayment pauses, implemented in March 2020 as pandemic relief, will conclude this summer, obliging millions of borrowers to resume payments.

Secretary Cardona stated that loan repayments will start 60 days after either the Supreme Court’s ruling or June 30, whichever comes first. The pause on student loan payments began during Donald Trump’s administration in response to the pandemic and has since been extended eight times by two administrations.

According to the Department of Education, 615,000 student loans have been canceled under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Another Republican representative, Ron DeSantis, signed legislation on May 15 that will halt the funding of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across all state universities.
