US grants $1.2M to institutions for study abroad programs

Initiated by the US Department of State and financially backed by the US government, the IDEAS Program aims to enhance and broaden educational opportunities overseas for American students.

The United States Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has awarded grants totaling nearly $1.2 million to 34 colleges and universities.

The grants were given through the 2023 Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for US Students Program, aimed at bolstering study-abroad opportunities for American students.

“IDEAS grants increase the capacity of accredited US colleges and universities to create, expand, and diversify study abroad programs for US students,” the government said.

The selected institutions, including public and private universities, community colleges, and minority-serving institutions from 28 states, will use the funding to develop and expand study abroad programs aligned with US foreign policy goals.

The grants will support activities such as forming international partnerships, training faculty and staff, engaging diverse student groups, and creating virtual and hybrid exchanges.

The colleges and universities receiving the 2023 IDEAS grants are Alabama A & M University, Bellevue College, Central Georgia Technical College, Clemson University – CUOSP, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Florida Memorial University, Georgia Gwinnett College, Grinnell College, Kentucky State University, Kettering University, Madison Area Technical College, Mount St Mary’s University, Oregon State University College of Forestry, Parkland College, Pellissippi State Community College, Regis College, Richard Bland College, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rutgers-Camden, Shoreline Community College, St. Cloud State University, The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Transylvania University, University of Connecticut, University of Kansas Center for Research, University of Maryland Baltimore County, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Rhode Island, University of South Dakota, University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Washington Tacoma, Ursinus College, Utah Valley University, and Xavier University.

The program also offers free virtual and in-person study abroad capacity-building activities for faculty, staff, and administrators.
