Johnson County Community College is pioneering a new approach in higher education by introducing faculty-led international study programs aimed at enriching students’ academic experiences with global perspectives.

At the forefront of these innovative programs are JCCC faculty members who guide students on concentrated two-week excursions to explore the social, political and cultural landscapes of different places. This distinctive approach blends academic rigor with practical experience, enabling students to earn college credits while gaining a deeper understanding of diverse cultures worldwide.

Expanding horizons

One recent program, led by Scott Crompton, associate professor of metal fabrication/welding, took students to the Netherlands to delve into the country’s advanced flood prevention techniques. The trip included a comprehensive tour of the Delta Works, an engineering marvel designed to protect against sea-level rise.

In another expedition, Jay Antle, executive director of sustainability, led a 10-day trip to Iceland. Students explored various aspects of environmental conservation, visiting geothermal power plants, glaciers and an active volcano. The program aims to empower students to contribute meaningfully to global sustainability efforts.

Recognizing that financial barriers can deter students from participating in such programs, JCCC has implemented a scholarship system. Students can access federal funding options, including the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000 in financial assistance. Over 50 JCCC students have already received these scholarships.

Transformative experiences

The International Education office at JCCC remains committed to offering transformative global experiences. By creating diverse programs that seamlessly blend educational goals with international travel opportunities, the college is at the forefront of experiential learning in an effort to enhance the quality of education at JCCC and nurture a generation of students ready to engage as global citizens.
