The University of Portsmouth has officially opened its London campus in Waltham Forest.

The University of Portsmouth London is poised to welcome its inaugural class of postgraduate students in February 2024, followed by a wave of undergraduate and further postgraduate students in September 2024, according to a press release.

Expansion
The campus’s initial footprint will encompass two floors in the prestigious Juniper House, strategically located near Walthamstow Central Station. The expansion builds upon the university’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and inclusivity.

The University of Portsmouth took proactive steps by opening an Admissions and Recruitment Centre in Walthamstow Library in March 2023, laying the foundation for the enrollment of its first cohort of students in Waltham Forest.

In addition to traditional courses, the University of Portsmouth London will offer work-based learning opportunities, including apprenticeships, tailored to the needs of the local community.

Rankings
This development follows the university’s recent rise in the Guardian University Guide 2024 rankings, reaching the 33rd position, up 34 places. The University announced its plans to establish a campus in Waltham Forest in March 2022, emphasizing its commitment to accessible higher education.

Waltham Forest, previously the only North East London borough without a higher education institute, is known for its cultural vibrancy and strong transportation links. The new campus is expected to significantly boost the local economy, creating over 500 jobs and injecting £372 million ($454 million) into the borough over the next two decades.

“We’re excited to bring our modern brand of University to Waltham Forest where we’ve found partners equally committed to providing opportunities for learning to everyone regardless of their background,” said Professor Graham Galbraith, University of Portsmouth Vice-Chancellor.

“University of Portsmouth London will support our ambitious commitment to become the top modern university in the UK, and one of the top 100 young universities in the world, by 2030,” he added.

Cllr Grace Williams, leader of Waltham Forest Council, also welcomed the development, highlighting its potential benefits for care leavers and broader educational opportunities for residents.
