The United Kingdom has increased its visa fees for international students, raising concerns about the potential impact on student mobility and the attractiveness of UK universities.
The move came into effect on Oct. 4, 2023, with some fees reaching as high as £1,500 (approximately $1,810) per person, according to Fragomen, the world’s leading provider of immigration services, the FE news reported.
The shift signals a departure from the previous policy focus on reducing net migration in the UK and highlights a shift toward viewing immigration as a potential revenue source for the country.
Here is a breakdown of the new immigration fees:
Additionally, the Immigration Health Surcharge, currently at £624 (approximately $753) per adult and £470 (approximately $567) per child or for those holding a Student visa, is set to increase later this year.
Minimum increase
In July, the government unveiled a price hike of 15 percent for the majority of work and visit visas, along with a minimum increase of 20 percent for priority visas, study visas, and certificates of sponsorship.
While the UK is renowned for its prestigious academic institutions, the substantial fee hikes may deter international students and potentially divert them to other countries.
Beginning in January 2024, further restrictions on international students are expected to come into effect, adding to the concerns surrounding the appeal of studying in the UK.
“The UK has a global reputation of having some of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world which attract a talented and diverse population,” said Naomi Goldshtein, a Director at Fragomen.
He added that the UK immigration system is designed “to attract the brightest and best genuine students offering a clear immigration pathway into employment.”
“However, such fee increases could make the UK less attractive and deter international talent from considering the UK,” he noted.
