The United Kingdom and Spain have struck a deal to grant students from both countries access to each other’s universities, making higher education more accessible for their youth.

Pilar Alegria, Spain’s minister for education and vocational training, and Hugh Elliot, the UK ambassador to Spain, signed the agreement.

In the next 30 days, Joan Subsirat, the minister for Spanish universities, is expected to sign an agreement that will mitigate the effects of Brexit on education between Spain and the United Kingdom, providing aid to British students in Spain as well as 70,000 Spanish students enrolled in 80 British schools.

The two countries have reached an agreement that will allow students to easily pursue their academic careers in either country. Previously, British students had to go through a lengthy process for validation of qualifications obtained in the UK by Spanish authorities before being able to access Spanish higher education institutions.

More than 40,000 non-EU students have been waiting years for their qualifications to be recognized in the country, a process known for its length.

The agreement between the UK and Spain is not expected to affect tuition fees or work access for U.K.-based students in Spain.

The Spanish government has been urged by the Ministry of Universities to permit British nationals studying in Spain to remain there after graduating, seeking to enhance the country’s international appeal.

The University System Law of Spain is set to introduce a new residence permit that will be extended for the duration of studies, rather than having to be requested annually, according to Minister of Universities Joan Subirats.

Under the proposed law, British students will be allowed to remain post-graduation and extend their first residence permit for the duration of their studies. Currently, they must renew it annually.
