The “Student Ambassador Scholarship Scheme” is set to provide nine Korean students with the opportunity to study English in Ireland in March.
The minister said that this is intended as a short-term solution to alleviate the strain on available slots for Irish students pursuing veterinary studies.
The support, which initially applied to those who commenced their studies last year, will now be extended to new entrants for the upcoming 2023-24 academic year, the government said in a press statement.
A new report from Ireland shows 18.4 percent, or nearly one in five higher ed students, suffer from bullying. Ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those with disabilities are said to be the most vulnerable to such attacks.
The decision was prompted by a recent incident in Sligo, where student accommodation was slated to be repurposed to house refugees fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The funding aims to facilitate mobilities and internships for students across Europe, fulfilling the Irish government’s commitment to ensuring continued opportunities for Northern Irish students post-Brexit.
The initiative, supported by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and the Department of Justice, aims to equip the next generation with essential knowledge and skills regarding consent.
