Surge in Chinese students defies odds, US elite universities see 33% rise despite tensions, challenges

Seven prominent US universities accommodated more than 12,600 Chinese international students in 2022, marking a 33 percent increase from 2018 figures. Data from certain institutions encompassed exchange students, with Chinese students constituting 36 percent of the total international student population at these seven universities.

Recommendations put forth by the committee are based on evidence gathered from a diverse range of sources, including experts from various regions of Australia, educational institutions, educators, students, and migration agents. These recommendations are a reflection of the insights and perspectives shared during the inquiry.

An analysis by the Russell Group suggests home undergraduates could experience a £2,500 shortfall per year this academic year — potentially rising to £5,000 by 2029-30 — mirroring the fiscal crisis of the mid-1990s that fueled tuition fee introduction.

The study Broader Impact Valuation Report conducted by EY on behalf of ENZ found that the pandemic caused a sharp decline in international education’s financial contribution to New Zealand’s GDP. In 2019, the figure stood at NZD3.7 billion (about $2.3 billion); in 2020, it plummeted to an estimated NZD0.8 billion (about $500 million).
