Under the SAVE plan, borrowers have the opportunity to significantly reduce their monthly payments, thereby lightening the financial burden that often accompanies pursuing a college degree.

The initiative, resulting from the FAFSA Simplification Act, allows institutions of higher education to offer postsecondary programs to confined or incarcerated individuals, granting them eligibility for Pell Grants.

Secretary Cardona emphasized the longstanding inequities faced by students of color in education and college access. He stated that the decision dealt another blow to the fight for equal opportunity in the United States.

The freeze on federal student loan payments was initially implemented by former President Donald Trump in March 2020 as part of the pandemic relief efforts. Subsequently, the payment pause was extended eight times by both the previous and current administrations.
