As of the report’s publication in October 2023, Bangladesh boasted 53 public universities and 110 private universities, engaging in academic activities across 100 institutions. The total student population in these universities, including affiliated colleges and madrasas, stood at 4,756,747.

In May this year, a parliamentary inquiry uncovered private vocational education and training providers working with unregulated education agents to lure students from prestigious universities for commissions, promote work visas, and create “ghost colleges” awarding degrees without actual attendance.

The rise in Bhutanese students moving to Australia is attributed to pent-up demand following the pandemic and the lifting of travel restrictions. While Bhutan’s government is concerned about losing skilled workers and students, Australia’s appeal lies in its historic ties, affordable education, and work opportunities for students’ dependents.
