Penn State University has selected Tabitha R. Oman, the current chief ethics and compliance officer, as the new vice president and general counsel. The Board of Trustees’ approval solidified this decision on Aug. 15, with her official duties beginning on Aug 21.

In her new role, Oman will assume the responsibilities of Penn State’s chief legal officer, offering legal guidance across the spectrum of university operations, including research, education, athletics, and healthcare. She will work closely with the President’s Council and oversee the Office of General Counsel, which manages all legal affairs concerning the university.

Oman’s extensive experience and reputation as a respected attorney position her to navigate the complex legal landscape facing higher education institutions. She will build upon the ethical foundations of Penn State, providing sound advice and strategic thinking to align the university’s actions with its values.

Having served as Penn State’s chief ethics and compliance officer since March 2022, Oman brings a deep understanding of the institution. She aims to foster collaboration and maintain the highest standards of legal counsel in her new position. President Neeli Bendapudi expressed excitement, highlighting Oman’s capabilities in steering the university responsibly.

The Office of General Counsel is crucial to ensuring legal compliance and upholding the university’s integrity. Oman will lead this office and, with her team of attorneys, guide the development of policies, manage legal issues, and collaborate with various units across the campuses.

Oman’s transition follows the interim leadership of Frank Guadagnino, who stepped in for Stephen Dunham. As Penn State looks ahead, Oman’s leadership promises to reinforce its commitment to legal excellence and ethical conduct.
