Trent University has announced the appointment of Dr. Rona Jualla van Oudenhoven as its first-ever director of equity, diversity, and inclusion,  starting in September. The university aims to strengthen its commitment to human rights and foster a more inclusive and diverse learning environment.

Stephanie Williams, Trent HR vice president, expressed enthusiasm about Dr. Jualla van Oudenhoven’s appointment, emphasizing her impressive track record in implementing EDI strategic plans on various campuses. The role encompasses providing strategic leadership, developing and implementing EDI policies, and spearheading a university-wide EDI action plan.

Implementing strong EDI initiatives within the context of international education can attract diverse talent, foster cross-cultural understanding, and dismantle barriers, ensuring equal access to educational opportunities and contributing to a more harmonious global society.

Moreover, Dr. Jualla van Oudenhoven will actively contribute to the university’s Anti-Racism Task Force and collaborate with different departments to promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and indigeneity.

“In fact, the measure of any institution, person, or entity is visible in how we treat our most marginalized groups. This is EDI advocacy,” said Oudenhoven, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity for all.

Currently serving as the chief diversity officer at Radboud Universiteit in the Netherlands, Dr. Jualla van Oudenhoven holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of West Indies, making her an exceptional choice for this crucial role.
