King’s College London has officially inaugurated the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education, marking a significant step in its partnership with Afe Babalola University in Nigeria.

Professor Shitij Kapur, President & Principal of King’s College London, endorsed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen the existing collaboration between the two institutions. The memorandum outlines collaborative initiatives, including the development of a joint law degree and the organization of summer school programs.

This visit also facilitated the formal inauguration of the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education at King’s. The establishment of the center was made possible through a personal contribution by Aare Afe Babalola.

Transformation
The overarching goal of the center is to empower promising individuals with knowledge and skills, with the aim of fostering positive transformation in their lives and communities.

The center will cover a diverse array of subjects, spanning from personal empowerment and gender-inclusive decision-making to mediation and transnational issue resolution. This initiative seeks to provide individuals with the tools needed to navigate their desired paths, with higher education serving as just one of the numerous potential avenues for their future endeavors.

Commitment
Both the memorandum of understanding with ABUAD and the establishment of the Afe Babalola Centre for Transnational Education underscore King’s enduring commitment to Africa.

This commitment is underpinned by a history of collaboration with African academics and institutions to promote education and research partnerships in the region. This visit also holds significance as it marks the first instance of a sitting Principal from King’s visiting Nigeria.

Engagement
Professor Kapur engaged with the Nigerian Universities Commission, the regulatory authority responsible for overseeing the quality of university education in the nation. The discussions centered on King’s efforts to establish new educational partnerships with universities in Nigeria.

During the visit, Professor Kapur and Professor ‘Funmi Olonisakin, Vice-President International, Engagement and Service at King’s College London, participated in two gatherings for the King’s alumni community in Nigeria. These events provided a platform to strengthen King’s global connections, an endeavor embraced by Professor Kapur.

“There are two things which unite King’s and ABUAD. The first is a commitment to education and the second is a commitment to serve society. We are delighted to be developing this partnership and building a relationship rooted in a shared commitment to advancing education, knowledge and skills,” Kapur stated.
