Stanford University has announced the selection of Jenny S. Martinez, dean of Stanford Law School, as the institution’s 14th provost. She succeeds Persis Drell, who steps down after serving since 2017.

Martinez’s legacy as dean includes establishing the Neukom Center for the Rule of Law, launching interdisciplinary initiatives, and enhancing financial aid resources. She has notably fostered inclusivity, leading efforts to strengthen diversity, equity, and belonging. 

President Richard Saller praised Martinez’s commitment to excellence, reflecting on her scholarship in international and constitutional law. The appointment showcases Stanford’s dedication to integrity in research and education.

The role of the new provost includes overseeing academic and budget administration, managing the deans of Stanford’s seven schools, and collaborating with senior administrators. 

Martinez’s appointment reflects her ability to enhance Stanford’s core mission. Her academic leadership and legal expertise position her as the university’s top academic and budgetary officer.
