Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to teach a course on foreign policy at Columbia University in New York in 2023.

Clinton, a Practice of International and Public Affairs professor, will teach “Inside the Situation Room,” which will focus on insights from diverse academic fields including political psychology, domestic politics, and international relations.

In addition, it will also provide direct experience of high-level principles to understand the main factors that support a nation’s most crucial decisions.

From the search for Osama bin Laden to the “red line” in Syria to negotiating with Iran, the course will also give students an opportunity to engage with diverse case studies and examine decision-making in a variety of historical and contemporary contexts.

“When it comes to crisis situations, you’ve always got to be prepared,” Clinton said in a short video released by Columbia SIPA.

The course will also be co-taught by School of International and Public Affairs Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo.

Analyzing and understanding the complex interplay between individual psychology, domestic politics, public opinion, bureaucracy, the international environment, and other factors, which influence one’s decisions in foreign policy, will also be taught to students in the course.

“As future participants in the policy process, this course will provide a vital background that they can draw on should they, too, find themselves facing high-pressure decisions with implications for national security and global stability,” the course description read.

The Inside the Situation Room course is open to all Columbia SIPA and undergraduate students from Columbia College, Barnard College, and Columbia University School of General Studies by application only.
