Hamburg, Leeds universities sign partnership agreement to address global challenges

Both universities have committed to working jointly on various activities designed to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to lead research and teaching across a wide array of interdisciplinary fields.

The University of Leeds and Universität Hamburg have signed a strategic partnership aimed at addressing global challenges. 

Under this partnership, both universities have committed to working jointly on various activities designed to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to lead research and teaching across a wide array of interdisciplinary fields, a press release stated. 

Universität Hamburg is a signatory of the Knowledge Equity Network, which seeks to increase access to knowledge and reduce inequality. This partnership with the University of Leeds marks an important step in their mission to foster international collaboration.

“The signing of this strategic partnership with Universität Hamburg is part of our ongoing work to create a collaborative, global network of institutional partners who share our ambitions to make a difference in the world,” Professor Simone Buitendijk, vice chancellor and president of the University of Leeds and co-founder of the Knowledge Equity Network, said in a statement.

A global platform for shared expertise

The shared commitment between these universities to transform academic culture with new models of equitable partnership, opening access to research and high-quality university education, is expected to provide a global platform for collaboration and open sharing of expertise.

“As Hamburg is a University of Excellence, we want to be an even more international university,” said Professor Dr. Hauke Heekeren, president of Universität Hamburg.

“It adds a strong partner from the all-important United Kingdom to our network,” he added.

During a recent visit by Universität Hamburg delegates to the University of Leeds, discussions centered on research culture, UK and German developments, and the ongoing relationship with KEN.

Professor Nick Plant, deputy vice-chancellor of research and innovation at the University of Leeds, highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing global challenges, saying, “Our planet and its people are facing unprecedented challenges and widening inequalities. By working together, we are embracing exciting plans to adopt open and collaborative practices of knowledge creation and dissemination with and for our local and global communities.”
