In an effort to advance sustainable development and offer a lifeline to vulnerable youth, two Qatar organizations, Silatech and Education Above All, have announced a panel discussion on the fringes of the 2023 United Nations High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development set to convene in New York, United States.

The panel, entitled “Thriving in the Green Economy: Unlocking the Potential of Vulnerable Youth through Green Jobs,” aims to illuminate the key role that green entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills training can play in creating job opportunities and promoting economic transformation.

As Qatar takes crucial steps towards addressing the climate change crisis, the creation of green jobs and provision of opportunities for marginalized youth has come to the fore. By using this United Nations forum as a platform, both Silatech and Education Above All intend to bolster international cooperation and encourage inventive solutions to jointly confront the immediate threats of climate change. This aligns with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

A diverse range of voices will contribute to the discussion, including representatives from the Qatar Fund for Development, the World Food Program, UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited, International Organization for Employers, and youth climate activists. This underlines the urgent need for sustainable solutions that address environmental problems while also creating livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities most affected by climate change.

In understanding the socio-economic challenges faced by vulnerable groups due to climate change, Qatar’s emphasis on green jobs offers a route for marginalized youth to participate actively in the green economy, ensuring a sustainable future for forthcoming generations.

Based on data from the International Labor Organization, the shift towards a greener economy could create up to 100 million jobs by 2030 and potentially help millions escape poverty.

The panel will explore a range of innovative strategies to provide green skills training for vulnerable individuals, giving them the tools and knowledge to thrive in the burgeoning field of sustainability. The discussion will also underline the potential of green entrepreneurship and innovation in sparking job growth and broader economic development.

The High-Level Political Forum provides an opportunity to review progress on all 17 Sustainable Development Goals ahead of the SDG Summit planned for September.

Silatech is a global non-profit organization founded in 2008 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser in Qatar. It focuses on connecting young individuals to economic opportunities and job prospects via inventive enterprise and employment initiatives.
