The Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis) has announced that the country experienced a historic surge in immigration in 2022, with approximately 1.46 million people entering the nation.

The figure represents the highest number of immigrants recorded since data collection began in 1950, the SchengenVisaInfo reported.

According to Destatis, the substantial increase in immigration can be largely attributed to the influx of individuals from Ukraine, as reported by SchengenVisaInfo.com.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has compelled a significant number of people to seek refuge in Germany, resulting in more arrivals than departures in 2022.

Destatis data reveals that approximately 1.1 million individuals migrated from Ukraine to Germany last year, while only 1.38 million people moved away to other countries during the same period.

When considering overall immigration figures, Destatis records indicate that 2.67 million individuals immigrated to Germany, while 1.2 million emigrated in 2022. These numbers demonstrate a substantial increase compared to the previous year, where Germany received 1.32 million immigrants and saw 994,000 individuals leave the country in 2021.

Moreover, Destatis’s data highlights a notable rise in immigration from other countries, particularly Syria, Afghanistan, and Turkey.  In 2022, Germany welcomed a total of 68,000 immigrants from Syria, 55,000 immigrants from Afghanistan, and 49,000 immigrants from Turkey.

Additionally, immigration from European Union countries experienced a moderate increase, with individuals from Romania, Poland, and Bulgaria showing a strong inclination toward Germany.

As a result of the surge in immigration, the population of Germany reached 84.4 million in 2022.

“Germany’s population grew by 1.3 percent in 2022, following a marginal increase of only 0.1% in the previous year. At the end of 2022, a remarkable 84.4 million people resided in Germany. This development is primarily attributed to a significant rise in net immigration, totaling 1,455,000 people, mainly driven by refugee movements from Ukraine,” stated Destatis.

Among Germany’s regions, Western Germany experienced the most significant impact from population growth. Nordrhein-Westfalen recorded the highest increase, with 214,500 new residents in 2022. It was followed by Bayern, with 192,400 new residents, and Baden-Wurttemberg, with 155,600 new residents.

Conversely, regions such as Bremen, Saarland, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Sachsen-Anhalt observed the lowest population growth, with less than 17,400 new residents.

There are 440,564 students from abroad pursuing their education in Germany as of 2022, according to an Erudera report. Among them, 349,438 are international students, while 91,126 are resident international students.
