The European Commission has announced the launch of the fifth Erasmus+ call for proposals, with the goal of establishing a minimum of 60 European University alliances, comprising over 500 institutions, by mid-2024.

Prospective applicants are invited to submit their proposals until Feb. 6, 2024, as per Schengen Visa report.

Fostering transnational collaboration
These European University alliances, as per the European Commission’s announcement, are poised to shape a new generation of individuals capable of pursuing higher education and expanding their employment prospects across the continent.

The objective is to promote transnational collaboration among higher education institutions, allowing new alliances to actively participate.

This year, European Universities have the opportunity to form a Community of Practice, fostering closer cooperation and the exchange of best practices.

“With their European transnational campuses, European Universities alliances are what makes Europe a reality for the young generations,” said Margaritis Schinas, vice president for the European way of life.

He added that these alliances are instrumental in cultivating a strong sense of European identity and equipping students, both young and lifelong learners, with future-ready skills through innovative educational approaches.

Moreover, students participating in these alliances receive a joint European degree that holds recognition across Europe.

Advancing collaboration
“Our commitment to European Universities is strong. This 2024 Erasmus+ call will help us achieve the objective of fostering deeper higher education cooperation between more than 500 universities by mid-2024,” said Iliana Ivanova, commissioner for innovation, research, culture, education, and youth.

She added that the initiative is important in creating opportunities for the establishment of partnerships within inter-university campuses that prioritize inclusivity, sustainability, and connectivity.

Additionally, it enables students to engage in transdisciplinary international projects alongside professors, researchers, companies, and innovators from diverse backgrounds.

European University alliances bring together a wide range of higher education institutions from across Europe, collaborating on education, research, innovation, and community service. Since the inception of the Erasmus+ calls in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023, these alliances have steadily grown to include more than 430 institutions across Europe.
