The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, which claims to be the world’s first graduate-level university solely focused on artificial intelligence research, has celebrated the enrollment of its largest and most diverse class since its founding in 2019.

The recent admissions cycle at MBZUAI was highly competitive, with the university receiving over 4,000 applications and admitting just 4.6 percent of applicants. This intake has effectively doubled the student population, now totaling nearly 300 students. This growth underscores the university’s prominent role as a global frontrunner in the field of artificial intelligence education.

Timothy Baldwin, acting provost of MBZUAI, emphasized the university’s commitment to utilizing technology for practical problem-solving. He highlighted the significance of the diverse student cohort in driving advancements in AI that benefit both society and various industries.

Baldwin also stressed that MBZUAI is nurturing future leaders who will make significant contributions to AI’s positive impact on various sectors, including healthcare, climate, and education.

The diverse class of 142 students at MBZUAI hails from 34 different countries, underscoring the university’s global appeal. Among them, 95 are pursuing master’s degrees, while 47 are engaged in PhD studies focusing on computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing.

Notably, 22 students originate from the top 100 universities worldwide, as recognized by respected rankings like CSRankings, QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the US News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking. MBZUAI’s international presence has further expanded with students joining from diverse nations such as Armenia, Bulgaria, Dominica, Libya, Serbia, and Uruguay.

MBZUAI’s reputation for diversity and inclusion, coupled with its impressive standing in CSRankings as one of the world’s top 20 universities in AI, computer vision, machine learning, and natural language processing, plays a pivotal role in attracting international students to the institution.

In July, MBZUAI introduced two new departments and four associated graduate programs centered on robotics and computer science. This strategic move aligns with the growing global demand for these disciplines, projected to reach market sizes of $225 billion and $140 billion, respectively, by 2030. These newly established master’s and PhD programs are poised to enhance the UAE’s AI ecosystem and solidify the nation’s stature as a global hub for AI research and innovation.
