Egypt leaps in international research publication output in 2022

Egypt climbed two spots, contributing 1.13 percent to the world’s output of international scholarly publications in 2021.

Egypt experienced a surge in international research publications in 2022, according to a report from SCImago, which was recently highlighted by Minister of Higher Education Ayman Ashour on May 6.

The country now ranks 24th among 233 countries with 44,219 international research publications, 388 h-index laboratories, and 42,493 citations.

Egypt climbed two spots, contributing 1.13 percent to the world’s output of international scholarly publications in 2021.

For the third consecutive year, the country has led Africa, ahead of 58 other countries, with South Africa and Nigeria ranking second and third, respectively, according to Ashour.

Egypt accounts for 27 percent of Africa’s total output in international publications.

Mahmoud Sakr, head of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, commended Egypt’s advances in various scientific fields, including agriculture, chemistry, engineering, medicine, immunology and microbiology, physics, and mathematics.

Egypt ranked first in Africa for agriculture and chemistry, placing 19th out of 222 countries for agriculture, and 18th out of 194 countries for chemistry.

In engineering and medicine in Africa, Egypt ranked first, placing 22nd and 25th globally out of 208 and 225 countries, respectively. It advanced two positions from the previous year in engineering.

Egypt maintained its first-place ranking in Africa and 19th overall among 209 countries for immunology and microbiology, a two-position jump from last year’s ranking.

In the latest global physics ranking, Egypt rose three spots to 25th out of 193 countries and secured first place in Africa.

Egypt rose three spots in this year’s global mathematics proficiency ranking, topping Africa and landing at 22nd out of 192 countries.
