Cuba’s minister of higher education affirmed the country’s commitment to advancing education during a meeting with UNESCO Deputy Director-General Stefania Giannini in Paris.

Walter Baluja, education minister, said this commitment aligns with their endorsement of education initiatives on a global scale.

Giannini commended Cuba’s cooperation and leadership in education, particularly its early ratification of the World Convention for Recognition of Higher Education Qualifications.

Significance of collaboration

The two officials emphasized the significance of collaboration, focusing on UNESCO’s Campus Africa program and its role in South-South and triangular cooperation.

Baluja shared Cuba’s experiences in university involvement for sustainable development. He was accompanied by the Cuban ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel.

Giannini and Baluja also discussed the World Network of Learning Cities, an initiative involving higher education institutions that work to enhance individual empowerment, social inclusion, economic development, and cultural prosperity.

Baluja also extended an invitation to Giannini to the International Congress of Higher Education University 2024, which is slated for Feb. 5 to 9 at the Havana Convention Palace. The event will feature a UNESCO-dedicated forum and discussions on reference area projections.

Global Education Coalition

UNESCO recently gathered together the Global Education Coalition members and representatives from member states for a discussion on digital transformation.

The primary objective of the meeting was to chart the course for the newly formed DTC, which was established by 30 members of UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition, as per a press release. It aims to accelerate the adoption of digital education worldwide by providing on-the-ground resources and expertise in digital technology.
