Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her government’s desire to establish an international standard education system in Bangladesh on Dec. 31, 2023, aligning with the curriculum of world-renowned educational institutions.

“We will give money for whatever needs in education. There are renowned international universities — we have to see how they teach. What curriculum and which method do they follow? We want to establish an international standard education system in Bangladesh,” Hasina said.

The Prime Minister made this announcement while inaugurating a free textbook distribution program, distributing books to students at pre-primary, primary, and secondary levels in the morning. She also emphasized the importance of practical, learning-based education to generate employment opportunities in the country.

Hasina expressed her aspiration to build a nation with modern technology and knowledge-based education, emphasizing the importance of students receiving such education from an early age.

Educational priorities

Consequently, the government is prioritizing technical education and vocational training. The Prime Minister expressed the desire to build a nation with modern-technology-knowledge-based education, asserting that they have already taken necessary steps toward that goal.

Sheikh Hasina highlighted the current era’s emphasis on modern technology and knowledge, stating that the country must keep pace with others. She also noted the importance of boys and girls learning technology from an early age.

She highlighted the need to update the education curriculum for Bangladesh to align with global standards, citing it as essential for the country to keep pace with the world. Referring to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she highlighted his view that education is an investment rather than an expenditure.

Irreplaceable nature of education

Encouraging students to focus on their studies, she emphasized that life lacks success without education. She stressed the irreplaceable nature of education, stating that while there may be wealth and other possessions, education is something that cannot be taken away.

Continuing, she expressed the goal of building a nation with versatile education, emphasizing the need for a smart and skilled population to achieve a smart Bangladesh.

Emphasizing the role of education in alleviating poverty, the head of the government stated their commitment to making Bangladesh a poverty-free country. She underscored that education plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal, and thus, the government has prioritized education as a means to eradicate poverty.

During the textbook distribution ceremony on the eve of 2024, Sheikh Hasina extended her wishes for a Happy New Year.

Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni presided over the event, with Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury delivering the welcome address. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Md Zakir Hossen also addressed the function.

Support from the EU

The European Union has disbursed the third installment of its ongoing Education Budget Support program to the Government of Bangladesh to bolster the nation’s educational system. The allocation of €44.875 million (approximately $49.1 million) seeks to propel the country’s educational reforms, conforming to both national and global obligations.

This latest tranche reflects the country’s positive advancements in its overall education sector performance, as well as the achievement of set targets within the EU budget support operation, known as the “Human Capital Development Programme 2021, HCDP 21” (2018-2024)”.

This fiscal year, GoB has further fortified its system in accordance with its commitments, emphasizing educational priorities such as improving access for out-of-school children, updating the curriculum, expanding access to Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and enhancing monitoring systems and accountability.
