Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the US has seen its international student community reach an all-time high with 192 students from 35 countries joining its campus. The students were warmly received by Augie’s Global Ambassadors, a group of seasoned international scholars dedicated to helping newcomers adapt to their new environment.

Before the academic year commenced, the Global Ambassadors underwent a rigorous two-week orientation program to prepare for their roles. Their responsibilities include mentoring first-year international students and organizing various events throughout the year to facilitate integration.

Two students from Nepal, Summer Pandey, 20, and Ishan Pyakurel, 18, shared their experiences and expressed their gratitude for the GAs’ support. Pandey emphasized the invaluable help she received when missing her first flight, while Pyakurel praised the warm reception at the airport and the support from Augustana staff.

“When I missed my first flight, I was called by a GA and she helped me a lot,” Pander said. Pandey added how settling in has been relatively easy. Pyakurel appreciated how they were met at the airport by college representatives. “People were really helpful moving in and carrying bags,” Pyakurel said.

Pandey noted the similarities between Augustana and her native Nepal, which made her feel at home. Pyakurel, a track enthusiast, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming season despite initial apprehensions due to his gap year.

“Augustana is a really beautiful place,” Pandey said. “It feels like home.”

Aitana Garcia, 18, from Spain discussed her mix of excitement and nervousness about her academic journey, particularly due to the language barrier. She remains eager to explore her interests despite the challenges.

“I’m excited to start my classes and schedule, learning about what I’m truly interested in and everything,” she said. “While ‘m pretty good at English, I’m still scared that I’m not going to get everything in class correctly. The language barrier can still be a bit challenging.”

Xong Sony Yang, Director of Augie’s Office of International Student and Scholar Services, underscored the GAs’ role in supporting the international student community. Yang explained that the GAs not only assist newcomers in their transition but also equip them with valuable skills for self-reliance and resilience.

“They’re learning some great professional developments to really take along with them,” said Yang. “Not only are they part of the welcome team but they’re also the ones teaching these international students to become self-sufficient and resilient.”
