The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence has marked a significant achievement in its mission to advance artificial intelligence education. Founded in 2019 as the world’s first graduate-level university exclusively dedicated to AI research, MBZUAI has recently welcomed its largest and most diverse class to date, solidifying its global prominence.

During the latest admissions cycle, MBZUAI faced fierce competition, receiving an impressive 4,000 applications. Despite this intense interest, the university upheld its commitment to academic excellence by admitting only 4.6 percent of applicants. This selective approach has effectively doubled the student population, now totaling nearly 300 individuals, highlighting the institution’s pivotal role in global AI education.

Diverse excellence

Timothy Baldwin, the acting provost of MBZUAI, underlined the university’s core mission of leveraging technology for practical problem-solving. He emphasized the significance of a diverse student body in driving AI innovations that benefit society and various industries.

Baldwin stressed that MBZUAI not only serves as an academic institution but also as a nurturing ground for future leaders set to make significant contributions to AI’s positive impact across sectors, including healthcare, climate and education.

MBZUAI’s recent class stands out for its remarkable diversity, with 142 students representing 34 different countries. Among them are 95 master’s degree candidates and 47 PhD students specializing in computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing.

Notably, 22 students come from the world’s top 100 universities, as recognized by respected rankings such as CSRankings, QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the US News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking. This influx of talent from leading institutions solidifies MBZUAI’s global reputation.

Innovation hub
MBZUAI’s commitment to inclusivity and its strong rankings in AI-related fields have attracted international students to the university.

In July, MBZUAI expanded its offerings by introducing two new departments and four associated graduate programs focused on robotics and computer science. This strategic move aligns with the growing global demand for expertise in these fields, projected to reach market sizes of $225 billion and $140 billion, respectively, by 2030.

These new programs aim to enhance the UAE’s AI ecosystem and establish the nation as a global leader in AI research and innovation.

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence’s enrollment of its largest and most diverse class underscores its commitment to academic excellence, practical problem-solving, and the development of global leaders in AI. This accomplishment solidifies MBZUAI’s position as a leading institution in AI education and ensures its continued role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
