Australia and India have launched “A Partnership for the Future – Australia’s Education Strategy for India,” a collaborative effort to strengthen educational and research ties. The initiative aims to foster closer collaboration in the field of education. It follows the commitment made by both governments earlier in the year.
This week, Australia and India took a significant stride in education collaboration with the inaugural meeting of the Australia India Education and Skills Council led by Indian education officials and attended virtually by Australian Education Minister Jason Clare and Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor.
A major announcement from the meeting was about Australian universities expanding in India. Deakin University and the University of Wollongong are opening campuses in Gujarat International Finance-Tec (GIFT) City. These universities have become the first foreign universities to establish campuses in India, specifically in GIFT City.
Deakin is set to start accepting student applications in November, with both universities planning to enroll students by mid-2024. Six more Australian universities are exploring the possibility of opening joint campuses in India, and Western Sydney University is also interested in starting a campus.
During the meeting, four new partnerships were initiated between Australian and Indian universities. The discussions included plans for the Maitri Scholars Program, aimed at facilitating the exchange of Indian researchers to Australia.
Additionally, collaborative research initiatives between universities and the development of streamlined regulations to enhance the ease of obtaining degrees from both nations were also addressed.
Clare noted the significance of international education for Australia, highlighting how the newly proposed plans and the Education and Skills Council meeting contribute to strengthening educational ties between Australia and India.
Meanwhile, O’Connor emphasized India’s significance as a major source of international students for Australia. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between the two countries in enhancing skills and training.
The bilateral relationship between Australia and India took center stage during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia in May. Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced various new opportunities for students, graduates, and young professionals from both nations. Albanese emphasized that Australia and India are closer friends and partners than ever.
The Australia India Education and Skills Council’s next meeting will occur in Australia in 2024. Further details about the meeting and the education strategy can be found on the Department’s website.
